When Taryn Donath won "Best Blues Artist" at the 2022 San Diego Music Awards, it was yet another notch in her list of overachievements.

She’s been surprising people since she was a little girl. Once she heard rock music playing in the family car, she knew she had to play piano. Taryn quickly amazed her tutor by playing note-perfect compositions. Her tutor had been teaching her to sight-read but was frustrated to learn that she had skipped the “reading” part of the lessons, and was simply playing expertly by an early age.

By the age of 14, she had gravitated to the blues and found herself playing alongside blues veterans 20 or 30 years older than her. Guitarist Eric Lieberman and harmonica master James Harman were early mentors.

When the TV network Nickelodeon decided it wanted a house-band comprised of children, Taryn was tapped as the piano player. She immediately impressed Paul Shafer, the famed keyboardist and bandleader for The Letterman Show, was who hired to coach the teens.

Taryn has always done things her own way, carving out a career in music when others told her she might want to pursue something a little more stable. But she persisted, and won on her terms.

These days, the singer-pianist has found a musical foil with talented drummer Matthew Taylor. His ability to shift gears instantaneously and adapt to any kind of improvisation is just what her music calls for.
